Wycliffe Well is one of the most famous Australian destinations for consistent sightings of extra-terrestrial activity. The vast desert region and flat degree view certainly provides clarity and improves chances for viewing any airborne movement. Wycliffe Well is also big on beer. Wycliffe Well began as a watering point along the stock route for the Overland Telegraph Line in the s, and became a market garden centre to service troops during the Second World War.
As the reputation of this hotbed of extra-terrestrial activity spread across the globe, the entrepreneur was quick to maximise the opportunity. Model aliens were installed outside the holiday park, UFO signage erected and a wide array of extra-terrestrial merchandise sold to hordes of travellers. At its peak, there was nightly country dancing and singalongs, a mini zoo with kangaroos and emus, and one of the largest ranges of beers in Australia.
The United States has Roswell. Australia has Wycliffe Well. Is the truth out there? Should we be looking to the skies? A stop at the tiny outback town of Wycliffe Well might make you question everything you thought you knew about the universe. Wycliffe Well is steeped in UFO lore. It has no crop circles, but it does have a roadhouse and a caravan park — just the place to rest your travel-weary bones, refuel your vehicle and stock up on some essential supplies.
The adjoining caravan park has what you would expect for its location: a mix of grassy and red-earth sites, some powered and many unpowered, an amenities block with laundry facilities, etc. The tourist park covers 60 acres and also features a lake suitable for boating and fishing. The town itself is over years old. It began as a watering point as part of the stock route for the Overland Telegraph Line. A grazing licence was granted to a nearby station owner and in , a vegetable garden in the area was established.
